What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discolouration. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look
How does it work?
The colour of natural teeth is created by the reflection and scattering of light off the enamel, combined with the colour of the dentine under it.With teeth whitening procedures, we apply a bleaching material to the enamel, which will cause it to reflect more light, giving it a whiter appearance.
Is it safe?
Teeth whitening is safe and unlikely to cause serious side effects, although some people’s teeth may become more sensitive for a short while. You may get mild gum irritation as well. Women should not have their teeth whitened while pregnant.
At North Hobart Dental, we make use of two different types of bleaching systems,
in-office laser whitening or
at-home whitening.
General examination and clean (with x-rays if needed) appointment is always needed before we can do teeth whitening.
At the first visit, we do a normal full mouth examination to make sure that you are a candidate for teeth whitening and that there are no other teeth that might affect the teeth whitening process. This usually involves x-rays as well, to make sure there are no cavities between your teeth where we can’t see with the normal eye.We also give you a teeth cleaning, so that the teeth whitening works better.
In-office whitening:
In-office whitening is when we use a more powerful whitening gel. We make use of different types of bleaching systems including PolaOffice, VenusWhitening and LaserWhitening. The length of the visit will depend upon the method used, how severe your stains are and how white you want your teeth to be. Different types of stains respond differently to the treatment.
At home bleaching:
For at-home whitening, we will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and will make custom mouthpieces to fit you. The mouthpiece needs to fit well. A close fit helps the whitening agent remain in contact with your teeth. At home, you will fill each mouthpiece with a whitening gel that we provide. You will wear the mouthpiece for several hours every day. Many people achieve the amount of whitening they want within a week or two. However, you may need to wear the mouthpiece for longer.
You also can buy whitening products over the counter
